The Great Benefits of Automation
Are You Ready for an Upgrade?
Choosing to automate your manufacturing line seems like a “no brainer.” New technologies to make the manufacturing process better, faster, and more consistent. While automation can be costly, the benefits greatly outweigh the cost.
When justifying automation upgrades, the motivation is clear when the frequency of failures increase, parts are no longer available, or costs rise, or when obsolete technology causes interoperability problems. Justification is less obvious when things seem to be running fine.
Return on Investment (ROI) is the most common measure used to justify capital expenditures. ROI is defined by the amount of time it takes until the financial gains offset the investment. For an ROI analysis, the first step is to understand current costs, and then look at the improvements automation could bring.
Another tool used to justify investing in automation is estimating the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Initial costs include the obvious things, like hardware, software, labor and parts for installation, and programming. But TCO includes longer term costs as well, such as software licenses, ongoing training, and product upgrades.
We have compiled a list of 10 things to consider when justifying an automation upgrade
