The Seven Wastes of Lean Manufacturing
In a nutshell, the idea behind lean manufacturing is to eliminate waste. More specifically lean manufacturing is designed to help manufacturers reduce costs and increase productivity by getting to the root of a problem. When it comes to manufacturing, “waste” is defined as any activity that doesn’t add value to a customer.
The concept of the Seven Wastes of Lean was devised by Toyota executive, Taiichi Ohno. The seven wastes include: Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Overproduction, Over-processing, and Defects. A simple way to remember them is with the acronym ‘TIMWOOD’.
“Progress cannot be generated when we are satisfied with existing situations.”
